“What do you think you're doing?” The big guy asked as he proceeded forward at his terminal velocity towards the computer notebook.

That was an extremely stupid question, which merited an equally intelligent answer “Oh, just squidding around …” [ Read More ... ]

Backing up backup processes

The only thing worse than losing data is the knowledge there was no backup. Thank goodness, storage has gotten cheaper; however, what data and how often should we backup? In last month's security best advice, a reader asked for help regarding backing up users' computers. Readers confirm that Leon is on the right track along with suggestions.

Chip Byter, PI, escapes the hands of the evil Dr. DelTree and discovers a major security breech. You can read Part I, Part II and Part III before reading the newest episode.

Thank you for your readership and the valuable feedback you’ve provided. We’re reviewing the article suggestions and other ideas for possible inclusion in future issues. One of the more popular suggestions is getting updates on Shavlik products. You can get the lowdown from the forums and the Virtual Tradeshow.

We look forward to more feedback. All you have to do is fill out the short reader survey and as a thank you, your name is entered in a drawing where you could win an Xbox.

Have a great holiday and here’s to a fabulous 2005!

See you next year,

 What's Your Best Advice?

Last Issue's Security Dilemma:

Back up insanity

A critical part of security is backing up data. Thankfully, storage has gotten cheaper so companies can allow employees to have private space on the server and use it instead of the local hard drive. However, not all employees remember to save everything on the network.

As the network admin of a small shop, I tell my users I only "guarantee" data stored on the server, which is regularly backed up. Like most shops, I don't back up individual client computers. Smart move or not?

This Issue's Security Dilemma:

Patchy Patching and Vexed Fixes

Obviously, patching and fixes are critical tasks in IT work. Not only do we need to worry about various operating system-related patches, but also other applications our company uses to conduct business daily. It's been a struggle to keep up with the constant barrage of software patches and fixes from all vendors, not just Microsoft. How do readers manage it?
