Get Your Hot Security Product News Here

Security Gumshoo-in, Elisa, has taken a vacation. Not to worry, the story will return in the future with a two-part conclusion. In our Dave Letterman-style feature, we talk with Eng-Wee Yeo, senior security consultant at Shavlik Technologies, who shares the top ten security products.

Last month's reader question about scare tactics brought some scary stories as well as great ideas on how to use real life situations to convince management to invest in security. The new question asks what many of you struggle with—how to deal with malware, adware and spyware on an enterprise level. Along with responses from you, we'll have an interview with an expert on the topic.

Thank you for your feedback, questions and suggestions. Many of you ask about topics that have been covered in earlier issues that you may have missed. Archives are here. We're happy to hear what's on your mind through your response to the reader survey. As always, we'll have a drawing and the current prize is an Xbox.

 What's Your Best Advice?

Last Issue's Security Dilemma:

Scare Tactics Are in Order

When it comes to being proactive, I have a hard time getting our executive team on board. To the tech team, it is obvious that a patching methodology, procedure or system for a repeatable way of doing things ensures the network remains stable.

However, if it requires an expense of money or time, the executive team is not so keen on giving us the budget needed. Do your readers have some security horror stories that I can use to put the fear of God into my executive team?

This Issue's Security Dilemma:

Prescription for growing pains needed

Our company has grown to the point where I have been asked to assume the first full-time system administration position in our organization. I have no problem managing spyware, adware and malware on my personal computer. However, it has caught up with my company, and employees are inundated with the "bad" wares and their machines suffer persistent problems. They don't understand the security issues especially with downloading free software like P2P (peer-to-peer) applications that came with spyware and other nasty add-ons.

It is time-consuming to battle these nasties and get them off the computers when there are so many computers infected. How do you handle this on a company level?

—Dewayne, Tech Support
