Sly Wares, Part II:
Fight back
by Mary
Landesman, Security Consultant
As mentioned
in last month's Sly
Wares, spyware tactics are insidious and designed with one purpose in mind—to
make money from your misery. Whether an attempt to gain click value as part of an affiliate ad program; nefarious gangsters
who use hidden keyloggers (Trojans that log your keystrokes and send the
collected data to attackers) to obtain your private banking details; or
unscrupulous marketers who want to package your surfing demographics for sale
to others; it sometimes seems the only one not anonymous on the Internet is
you. [ Read More ... ]

Protecting without missing out on the Internet's tools
Many
of you wrote saying you liked last month's feature, especially since fighting sly
wares is new at the enterprise level. So, we have a
follow-up article on how you can protect yourself without giving up the
convenience of doing business and shopping online.
If we could test every scenario and unique
setting, we'd never get anything done or released.
Readers provide ways on how to test patches without drowning in it. The
new question for
readers asks how to pull together magic numbers to make management happy.
We want to ensure we're not missing out on what
you'd like to see in future issues, and you can let us know by completing the
reader survey. We read
every reply and as a thank you, your name goes into a virtual box for a drawing
where you could win an MP3 player.

Last Issue's Security Dilemma:
Drowning in the sea of testing
I understand the importance of testing patches
before deploying. However, each system in our environment is unique, and we
don't have a test environment that mirrors
every system, especially with having over 250 systems. This
makes automated patching difficult. Furthermore, we are dealing with limited
bandwidth in our organization. There is barely enough bandwidth to handle
production traffic, so maintenance traffic
such as patches and virus updates are hard
to move through the system.
The network is used
fairly consistently 24x7x365. We all agree PCs need to be patched,
but how do we deal with this infrastructure? What are others in the same
situation doing to ensure adequate patching where you can't test before
deploying?

This Issue's Security Dilemma:
Reportin' Stats to
Please the Boss
Our executives like
numbers. And heaven forbid we disappoint them … so here’s our plan: We want to
collect network security and performance data and put it into a report. That
way the executives will know what happens in our shop on a regular basis. For
those of you who are already doing this, how do you monitor and present this data to executives—and how often? What is the best way to leverage such a report for
budgeting and network re-evaluations? I’d
appreciate any help your readers can give me.
