How to Get Calorie-free Donuts

Donuts are a tasty treat, but many people avoid them because of the calories and fat in them. A new kind of donut has arrived on the scene, and it has zero calories and zero fat. Don't run out to buy it just yet! Believe it or not, you don't want this donut. You might already use Donuts!, but don't know you do, as the name hasn't caught on yet. I wouldn't call this type of donut a healthy one, because when you get one, you might feel stressed or suckered.

Like “donut,” IDS has another meaning, and it isn't the plural of identification. You may have heard about IDS and IPS, and perhaps search endlessly for non-salesy information on them to no avail. A reader looking into IDS and IPS needs help from those of you who know about these systems.

Managers love numbers and anything that supports what's happening in their shops and their successes. Readers offer tips and tools for making the boss happy with reports.

We thank you for taking time out of your schedule to read the newsletter, and we hope you benefit from the content.  What's Your Best Advice?

Last Issue's Security Dilemma:

Reportin' Stats to Please the Boss

Our executives like numbers. And heaven forbid we disappoint them … so here’s our plan: We want to collect network security and performance data and put it into a report. That way the executives will know what happens in our shop on a regular basis. For those of you who are already doing this, how do you monitor and present this data to executives—and how often? What is the best way to leverage such a report for budgeting and network re-evaluations? I’d appreciate any help your readers can give me.

This Issue's Security Dilemma:

Need Hype-free Information about IDS and IPS

I am presently looking at various Intrusion Detection (IDS) and Prevention (IPS) Systems for the bank. I can't find "features to look for" information on the Internet after much searching. I'm familiar with the principles behind IDS, but when it comes to selecting a system, the reviews available contain a lot of sales hype and no useful information. Also, just like most techs, only two of us monitor the system in conjunction with all our other duties. What do you look for when researching IDS and IPS, and what works best for an outside-managed IDS and an internal-managed system?
